Sedation

We understand that some people need something more to help them overcome their fears and relax in the dental surgery. We are able to administer a sedative medicine in the form of an injection. You become drowsy and unaware of any treatment, but you are still able to co-operate with the dentist. The effects of the sedative medicine takes some time to where off and the sedationist will tell you how long the drugs will take to clear from your body. You won’t be able to drink alcohol, drive or work machinery during this time. You will have to arrange for someone to accompany you to and from the surgery.

We do not administer the sedatives ourselves. We are pleased to have an association with a reputable group of qualified anaesthetists, called Sedation Solutions, who will attend the practice by arrangement to provide this intravenous sedation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sedation is the process of using medication to help a patient relax and reduce anxiety during medical or dental procedures. The sedatives work by altering the central nervous system, calming the body and mind. Depending on the type of sedation, patients may be semi-conscious, deeply relaxed, or even asleep, with minimal memory of the procedure.

There are several types of sedation used in dentistry:

  • Minimal Sedation: You are awake but relaxed.
  • Moderate Sedation: You are relaxed and might not remember the procedure.
  • Deep Sedation: You are on the edge of consciousness but can be easily awakened.
  • General Anaesthesia: You are completely unconscious throughout the procedure.

Sedation is generally safe for most people when administered by trained professionals. However, safety depends on factors like the patient’s health, the type of sedation, and the complexity of the procedure. Before sedation, a thorough medical evaluation is essential to ensure it is appropriate for your needs.

If you feel anxious about sedation, speak openly with your doctor or dentist. They can provide additional information, offer reassurance, and may suggest alternative methods to make you feel more comfortable, such as light sedation, relaxation techniques, or discussing your concerns before the procedure.
